Best Docking Station for Multiple Monitors

Quick post here to enlighten individuals (like my former self) who are not quite sure what exactly they need to buy when attempting to hook up multiple monitors from their laptop. The two options come down to:

  1. Will you be connecting to your laptop via USB C?
  2. Will you be connecting to your laptop via USB?

Not all laptops have as USB C port. However, one would logically think that if they bought a docking station that connects to their laptop via USB C that you could just buy a USB C to USB adapter, right? Wrong. This connection will allow you to connect keyboard / mouse / chargers to your docking station and be connected to your laptop, but you will not be able to actually power and extend your monitor(s) from your laptop. Let me show you what I have found best for each scenario.

USB C Docking Station

In my experience, the absolute best docking station for performance and quality for USB C connection is the Dell WD19. This will also allow you to charge your laptop directly from the docking station since the docking station is being powered via 180W power supply. I have been using this at work for quite some time and it has been flawless. It has just about every port I would ever need and it allows me to connect all of my monitors and accessories to one hub so if I need to unplug for a meeting I am not held up scrambling to remove 5-6 individual cables only to plug them all back in after the meeting. 10/10 recommend.

USB Docking Station

This next option for USB connection docking stations is for laptops that do not have a USB C port and may only have (1) HDMI port. This product is the USB Docking Station GIQ. Absolute lifesaver after I ordered (2) monitors and found out the Dell WD19 was not compatible with my laptop since my laptop did not have any USB C ports and the adapters did not work. The GIQ USB docking station is much cheaper and much smaller, but still does everything needed to run (2) 27″ monitors via HDMI, power my wired gaming keyboard and mouse, and still have ports left over. This docking station also includes a USB to USB C adapter in case you wanted to use this via USB C on newer laptops should the price point be enticing. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this purchase.

Docking Station for Dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming

If you are like me and have an older laptop, similar to my Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, yet you want / need a docking station for multiple monitors, I highly recommend the USB Docking Station GIQ

Through research, trial, and error, the tough choices are made simple for you!
